DALLAS – Federal prosecutors have indicated they are readying an application for the extradition of a former Mexican governor indicted in the United States for racketeering and money laundering.
In court documents filed this week, prosecutors asked for certified copies of an arrest warrant for Tomas Yarrington Ruvalcaba, the former governor of the Mexican border states of Tamaulipas.
Prosecutors said the copies of the warrant are needed to comply "with the formal extradition" of Yarrington and a co-defendant, Fernando Alejandro Cano Martinez.
An indictment filed in May accuses Yarrington of taking bribes from the Gulf Cartel as it smuggled cocaine and marijuana into the United States.
Yarrington's American attorney, Joel Androphy of Houston, says Yarrington is not in custody and any application for extradition would require a formal hearing in Mexico.
