The countdown to the world’s largest soccer tournament has begun and joining in the fun are singers Carlos Vives and Ricky Martin.
Vives revealed one of the songs, “La Copa de Todos (Everyone’s Cup),” which will represent Latin America at the FIFA World Cup in Brazil in June. The Colombian singer produced the song with the support of Coca-Cola, an official sponsor of the tournament.
“Soccer is not only felt by those who play it, but everyone who, through it, finds joy. And that's what soccer is, joy,” Vives said during the presentation of the song.
“This song connects the continent in the sense that we gave it a Colombian touch with the addition of an accordion to let people know about our culture.”
In the track, Vives is joined by Brazilian singer Gaby Amarantos and American singer David Correy.
“We want the song to show the joy and color of Brazil,” Amarantos said. “To show that there is a Brazil in many parts of the American continent and that this is what will unite us at the World Cup. In addition, soccer is a democratic sport, everyone fits and this song is like that – inclusive.”
Vives is not the only Latino artist producing a World Cup theme. Ricky Martin, who lent his voice for the 1998 World Cup in France, is partnering with Sony on “Super Song: The Global Music Contest for the 2014 FIFA World Cup,” in which they ask songwriters to submit compositions for Martin to perform. Voting for the song is currently open.
Colombian singer Shakira sang the theme “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)” for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
