CARACAS, Venezuela – Two Venezuelan student activists deported from Colombia last week will be kept in detention in Caracas.
Venezuelan judicial authorities announced Monday that anti-government activists Lorent Saleh and Gabriel Valles will be held by the country's intelligence service.
The young men are members of the group Operation Liberty, which is critical of the Venezuelan government.
Defense attorney Alfonzo Granadillo said Monday that the two students had appeared in court. Granadillo says they violated a 2010 probation agreement that required them to stay in the area and appear periodically before a judge.
The attorney general accuses the students of spreading lies and disturbing the peace.
Colombia Immigration Office director Sergio Bueno says they were deported because of their immigration statuses. He denies charges that the deportations amounted to political persecution.
