A 19-year-old U.S. Marine who was shot during the weekend while visiting friends and family in Southern California, died last night at California Hospital Medical Center.
Carlos Segovia Lopez, who was stationed at Camp Pendleton, passed away at 8 p.m. on Monday night, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner told Los Angeles Times.
Segovia was found unconscious on top of a Dodge Charger at 11:35 p.m. on Friday.
He had left Camp Pendleton earlier in the day and visited his girlfriend before driving back when he was shot, a family friend, Claudia Perez, told the newspaper.
“He texted my son that he was bringing pizza,” Perez said. “He never made it.”
Friends and family are planning on holding a vigil for Segovia at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday where he was shot, according to police.
The Marine had no known connection to gangs or other illegal activity, police said, and no suspect has been identified in the attack.
According to the Times, Capt. Peter Whittingham of the Los Angeles Police Department said that the shooting is “absolutely a mystery.”
Segovia was born in El Salvador and was brought to the U.S. by his mother. He enlisted in the Marines six months ago.
He was assigned to the student reconnaissance training company and formerly he had the rank of lance corporal, a Marine Corps spokesperson told the Times.
