NEW DELHI -- An Indian official says a man arrested in India in the 1989 slaying of an American has filed an appeal against his extradition to the United States.

The official says Mahfuz Huq was arrested in New Delhi in February and is accused of murdering Todd Kelley, whose body was found in his home in Hamilton, Indiana.

The official said Friday that India received an extradition request for Huq from the U.S. in March.

He said that since Huq is wanted on a murder charge, his appeal will most likely be turned down. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

U.S. authorities said Huq fled the U.S. after Kelley's death. Huq is a naturalized U.S. citizen whose family is from Bangladesh.
