Memorial service held for Kentucky woman slain in Chile

BENTON, Ky. (AP) – A 22-year-old western Kentucky woman who authorities said was slain in Chile has been honored at a memorial service.

WKYT-TV reported that services were held Saturday for Erica Hagan in Kentucky's Marshall County.

The body of Hagan was found in the bathroom of her apartment in the southern city of Temuco, Chile on Sept. 6.

Local prosecutor Cristian Paredes said a poker was used to strike Hagan, adding that a physical examination showed at least three lesions on her head. Police also found traces of a fire – possibly to erase evidence.

Chilean authorities said a security guard at the school named Domingo Cofre has been arrested in the case.

Hagan, a Georgetown College graduate, had been in Temuco since July 28 working as a teaching assistant at a local school. She had minored in Spanish and had traveled to Chile as part of a teaching program.

She had been scheduled to return home in December.

The college is also planning a memorial, but no date has been set.
