Ivory Coast to investigate former strongman

Ivory Coast's president says investigations will soon open on the arrested former strongman.

Alassane Ouattara said Sunday that police will begin preliminary investigations into Laurent Gbagbo on Wednesday.

Gbagbo refused to cede power after losing a November poll to Ouattara, plunging the West African nation into four months of chaos and bloodshed. Gbagbo was arrested April 11.

Ouattara has said he wants Gbagbo tried by national and international courts. Aid groups have said atrocities were committed during the standoff.

Ouattara says the matter has not progressed to a judicial level. Justice Minister Jeannot Ahoussou says investigators have until June to deliver their reports. He says some 200 people close to Gbagbo will also be investigated.
