ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast – An army official says unidentified gunmen carried out overnight attacks against a power plant in the commercial capital and military positions in the southeastern town of Bonoua.
Kouassi Kakao, spokesman for the military chief of staff, said men wearing military uniforms tried to take control of the Azito thermal power station in Abidjan at around 3 a.m. Monday but were repelled by security forces.
He said a separate attack in Bonoua, about 60 kilometers (40 miles) east of Abidjan, began at 11 p.m. Sunday night and lasted until 5 a.m. Monday. Gunmen targeted a roadblock. Kakao said it was too early to comment on casualties.
Gunmen have carried out nine attacks on military positions throughout Ivory Coast in recent weeks. President Alassane Ouattara has blamed loyalists of ex-President Laurent Gbagbo.
