Chinese Truck Driver Sentenced to Die For Mongol Herder's Death

BEIJING -- A Chinese truck driver has been sentenced to death after an ethnic Mongol herder was fatally dragged under his truck in a case that triggered Inner Mongolia's largest demonstrations in 20 years.

The official Xinhua News Agency said the sentence for Li Lindong was read Wednesday immediately after his six-hour trial ended at the Intermediate People's Court in the region's Xilingol League.

Another driver who was sitting in the cab of Li's truck was sentenced to life in prison.

The herder, who like many Mongols uses just one name, Mergen, was killed May 10 while he and others were blocking the road through their village to protest noise and pollution produced by coal trucks transiting the grasslands.
