Israeli forces are deployed around Israel and the West Bank in case of unrest linked to a Palestinian bid to win recognition of a state in the U.N.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is scheduled to speak later Friday at the U.N. He is expected to call on the world body to recognize an independent Palestinian state.

The Palestinians are planning mass demonstrations later in the day.

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld says police have about 22,000 officers on duty across the country.

He says special measures were taken during Muslim prayers at the Al-Aqsa mosque, in the sensitive Jerusalem compound known to Jews as the Temple Mount.

Police also didn't allow in men under the age of 50, a measure to prevent disturbances. The prayers ended without incident.
