A New York City woman who spent most of three years in solitary confinement on Rikers Island before being freed last year will not face any felony charges in connection to a jailhouse confrontation with guards.
Candie Hailey had been indicted on a felony charge of criminal mischief, which could have sent her to prison for seven years. On Monday, the Bronx judge presiding over her trial told prosecutors to instead cite her for four disorderly conduct violations. The violations carry fines but not any more serious penalties like misdemeanors and felonies would.
Thirty-two-year-old Hailey served more than two years in solitary confinement at Rikers and was hospitalized at least eight times for suicide attempts. Her incarceration and subsequent struggle once she was out was documented by The Associated Press earlier this year.

She has pleaded not guilty. Her attorney says the charges stem from her poor treatment on Rikers.
