The Latest: Man charged in officer's slaying to be arraigned

COVENTRY, R.I. – The Latest on the capture of a fugitive wanted in the shooting death of a police officer in North Carolina (all times local):

A fugitive wanted in the shooting death of a police officer in North Carolina is expected to be arraigned after he was captured by police in Rhode Island.

State police say 23-year-old Irving Fenner was located at a home in Coventry early Wednesday. Police say Fenner surrendered peacefully.

Authorities said at a news conference Wednesday afternoon that Fenner was treated at a hospital for a gunshot wound and released.

State Police Col. Steven O'Donnell says Fenner was injured during Saturday's shootout with 38-year-old Shelby police Officer Tim Brackeen in the North Carolina city. Brackeen died Monday.

Fenner is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday evening at state police headquarters on charges of first-degree murder and being a fugitive from justice. It's unclear if he has a lawyer.

Rhode Island State Police say they have captured a fugitive wanted in connection with the fatal shooting of a police officer in North Carolina.

State police say 23-year-old Irving Fenner was located at a home in Coventry, Rhode Island, around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday. State Police Col. Steven O'Donnell tells WPRI-TV that Fenner surrendered peacefully.

Fenner was taken to a hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound that authorities say apparently happened in North Carolina.

A state police tactical team had raided a home in South Providence just before 9 p.m. Tuesday in hopes of finding Fenner, but he was not there.

Authorities say Fenner shot 38-year-old Officer Tim Brackeen of the Shelby Police Department in the North Carolina city on Saturday.

Brackeen was struck in the chest and died Monday.

Authorities in Rhode Island are searching for a fugitive wanted in connection with the fatal shooting of a police officer in North Carolina.

A state police tactical team raided a home in South Providence just before 9 p.m. Tuesday in hopes of finding 23-year-old Irving Fenner.

Maj. Joseph Philbin says the suspect was not at the home. His half-sister was reportedly taken into custody.

Fenner is accused of shooting 38-year-old Officer Tim Brackeen of the Shelby Police Department in the North Carolina city on Saturday.

Brackeen, who was found shot in the chest, died on Monday.

It's unclear how authorities came to believe Fenner is currently in Rhode Island. He's considered armed and dangerous.
