Police say a man died of an apparent medical emergency while in custody after he was chased by officers for skipping out on a restaurant bill on Long Island.

Police say 20-year-old Marlon Paton, of Brooklyn, was pronounced dead at a hospital just before 11 a.m. Wednesday.

Police say he became "lethargic and unsteady on his feet" after trying to jump over a fence. Officers say they let him lie down in a police car and called for an ambulance.

Paton and two other men were in a vehicle that had crashed in Elmont after fleeing an Applebee's at about 12:45 a.m. Wednesday. Police say the restaurant had called police saying the three left without paying their bill.

The two other men were arrested on charges of theft of services.
