A Qantas jet heading to Australia with 231 people on board was forced to make an emergency landing early Tuesday after an engine exploded in flight over the Pacific, KTVU.com reported.

The Qantas 747, which was heading from San Francisco Airport to Sydney, Australia, had to return to San Francisco early Tuesday after an engine problem.

San Francisco airport duty manager Carol Spear says Flight 74 landed safely and there were no injuries.

The flight left San Francisco at 11:05 p.m. It returned at 12:45 a.m. with an engine out.

Spear said Qantas put the passengers up in local hotels for the night and would make arrangements for them to leave for Sydney on Tuesday.

She didn't know if passengers were able to walk off the plane or had to use chutes.
