MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The top prosecutor in Memphis says she is reviewing a report on the investigation into the fatal shooting of a black teen by a white police officer to determine whether criminal charges are warranted.
Shelby County District Attorney Amy Weirich said Thursday that she has received a 600-page report compiled by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
Weirich asked the state agency to investigate the July 17 shooting of 19-year-old Darrius Stewart by Officer Connor Schilling.
Authorities say Stewart was a passenger in a car stopped by Schilling. Police said Schilling put Stewart in a squad car without handcuffs as he checked on two active warrants under Stewart's name.
Police said Stewart attacked Schilling when the officer returned to handcuff him, and Schilling shot the teen as they struggled.
