Police are investigating animal cruelty at the South Carolina Aquarium in Charleston after a report that a temporary worker shut off life-support systems for the aquarium's massive salt water tank.

The Great Ocean Tank holds 385,000 gallons of water and is home to sharks and other creatures.

Police tell local news outlets that alarms alerted aquarium staffers several times last month that the life-support system had been turned off. A police report says staffers found electrical breakers had been manually turned off and set up a camera and saw a temporary worker throwing the switches.

The investigation is ongoing and no one has been charged.

The worker was hired from a temporary staffing agency. Aquarium spokeswoman Kate Dittloff says no animals were injured.
