AUSTIN, Texas – A first-year University of Texas dance student was the victim of a homicide and police are searching for a man seen near the heart of campus, where her body was found.
Campus President Greg Fenves identified the victim Thursday as 18-year-old Haruka Weiser from Portland, Oregon.
Assistant Austin Police Chief Troy Gay says Weiser was seen leaving UT's drama building around 9:30 p.m. Sunday. She never made it back to her dorm.
Investigators released surveillance video of a man they say is a suspect walking a bike around 11 p.m. Sunday along a nearby street.
Gay would only say that Weiser was assaulted. He didn't release details.
Weiser was reported missing Monday, and her body was found the following day in a creek near the alumni center and football stadium.
