Authorities in Alabama say an Irondale police officer shot and killed a man in Birmingham.

Irondale police Sgt. Michael Mangina wouldn't say what led to the shooting on Thursday evening.

But he says police from the suburban city that adjoins Birmingham fatally shot the man and that no officers were hurt.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is investigating.

Witness Steve Fodor tells local media he heard a flurry of gunshots and followed the sound of police sirens to a downtown intersection. He says he saw a white male on the ground with officers standing over him in a parking lot.

Two crashed vehicles were a few hundred feet away from the scene.

The races of the officers involved were not immediately known.
