DETROIT – Detroit police say a driver accelerated to more than 70 mph on a residential street while fleeing officers before striking and killing two children and injuring three other children and an adult.
Police Chief James Craig says the chase Wednesday evening on the city's east side lasted about 75 seconds. He says police began chasing a car with a firearms suspect inside but backed off. Craig says the car then struck the children and an adult a few blocks away.
Craig says the six were taken to St. John Hospital, where two of the children were declared dead.
Craig says police arrested two people from the car, including one who had a handgun. One had injuries that weren't life-threatening.
The Associated Press sent a message seeking updated information from police.
