Police say three people — including two women in their 80s — were killed when a driver struck a group of pedestrians outside a Southern California church as a Christmas service ended.

Redondo Beach police Sgt. Shawn Freeman says the crash Wednesday night along the Pacific Coast Highway left as many as nine people injured after the female motorist hit the pedestrians and another car.

Police initially said one person had died.

The woman was driving a white sedan north when she ran a red light, plowed into the pedestrians and then hit another vehicle.

Police took the woman to a hospital, where she was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
