Lawyers for the parents of a teenager who hanged himself in his cell at a juvenile detention center in Atlanta say their clients have settled a lawsuit against the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice.

Denise Butler and Jimmy Davidson filed a federal civil rights lawsuit in December saying their son, who was identified only as J.D., was mistreated and kept in deplorable conditions.

They dismissed the lawsuit Monday. Their lawyers, Eric Fredrickson and Matt Harman, said a settlement agreement was reached. They declined to release the amount of the settlement, citing their clients' privacy.

Nick Genesi is a spokesman for the state attorney general's office, which represented the Department of Juvenile Justice and some of its employees named in the lawsuit. Genesi said the settlement was for $1.7 million.
