A Maine man who turned himself in after spending two months hiding in the woods has been ordered held without bail on charges he broke into his ex-girlfriend's home and shot her to death while her children slept.

Robert Burton appeared before a judge via video link Wednesday. A bail hearing is scheduled for Aug. 17.

Burton is charged with murder in the killing of 37-year-old Stephanie Ginn Gebo, in Parkman. Police say he killed her after she ended their relationship. Her body was found June 5.

He surrendered Tuesday in Dover-Foxcroft, ending the longest manhunt in decades in Maine.

Lawyer Jeffrey Toothaker was appointed Wednesday to represent Burton. Toothaker says he plans to meet with his client this weekend for the first time.
