Police in New Mexico have identified a woman who was hit and killed by her own car last week. Las Cruces resident Jill Thompson was pinned underneath her 1974 Plymouth Satellite in what police say appeared to be an accident.
A relative heard Thompson’s engine running in the driveway Thursday, according to police. The relative became concerned and when they went to check on what was happening, they found Thompson’s body underneath. Thompson died before police arrived on scene.

Investigators have said they believed she was killed after she accidentally started the car with the transmission in reverse, not park. Thompson started the car and walked down the driveway to open the gate -- and while she was doing that, the car rolled backward until it hit her, according to investigators.
They started the car with the vehicle in reverse to confirm their theory.

People in the neighborhood said Thompson was a good person and good friend on the Las Cruces Police Dept.'s Facebook page.
“Jill was a gem. Wonderful and kind. Superb leader. She will be missed,” write David Knapp, a Las Cruces resident.
Steven Spencer, Thompson’s former pastor, wrote about Jill’s strong faith.
“Jill was totally awesome person and committed and faithful believer in her Lord Jesus Christ. I was proud to be her pastor long ago and have many fond memories of our great conversations,” wrote Spencer.
Janet Williams McKellar wrote simply, “such and amazing lady and friend.”
