SAN FRANCISCO – A woman who was ordered to return her husband's body to the Navajo Nation says she'll continue fighting to have him buried in Northern California.
A tribal court on the nation's largest Indian reservation ruled last month against interfering with burial plans in place by DeeRoy Spencer's family in northeastern Arizona. The court says disputes over a lifeless body violate the tribe's natural laws and threaten to bring his family harm.
The Vietnam veteran died last month in New Mexico. He was 68.
His wife, Jean LaMarr, wants Spencer buried at a Northern California veterans cemetery.
On Wednesday, she paid to have his body shipped to a mortuary in Shiprock, New Mexico. But LaMarr said Thursday she plans to appeal the Navajo Nation court ruling.
