An Indiana man who fatally stabbed and shot a fellow Purdue University student on campus says he lied to doctors about having hallucinations.

Cody Cousins has already pleaded guilty to murder in the death of 21-year-old Andrew Boldt, who was killed in January inside a classroom filled with students on the school's campus in West Lafayette.

During a sentencing hearing Friday, Cousins testified that he killed Boldt "because I wanted to." He says he lied to doctors about having auditory hallucinations.

Prosecutors argued for the maximum 65-year sentence. But defense attorneys argued that the 24-year-old is mentally ill and needs mental health treatment now, not when he's released from prison.
