BALTIMORE – A man was shot by one of his sons at a church Tuesday during an argument after the funeral for another son, who was killed last month, police said.
The man was taken to a hospital and is expected to survive, said T.J. Smith, a Baltimore Police Department spokesman.
Early investigation indicated the dispute might have been over the content of an obituary, Smith said.
Smith expressed exasperation at what he called a ridiculous crime.
"I can't even describe how unnecessary and senseless this is," he said. "This was supposed be a celebration of a life, and someone decided to use a gun to handle a dispute."
The repast at New Song Worship & Arts Center in Baltimore's Sandtown-Winchester neighborhood was for the family and friends of Antonio Addison, 22. His body was found on the evening of May 25 in the same neighborhood, where he also lived. He had been shot multiple times.
Addison's 47-year-old father and 26-year-old brother got into an argument in a vestibule just inside the hall about 2:15 p.m., and the younger man shot his father, Smith said. Police said in a news release that they arrested the younger man at the scene.
"There's still food on the table inside this place," Smith said.
Police said in the release that the father was in serious but stable condition.
Police have not named the two men but said in the release that they would release the brother's name after he was charged.
The center is part of New Song Community Church. A man who answered the phone there Tuesday declined to talk about what happened.
Sandtown-Winchester is the same neighborhood where Freddie Gray, who was fatally injured last year in police custody, was raised and arrested.
