A man who was convicted of raping and murdering a 12-year-old girl and has spent almost two decades in prison has been released on $1 million bail as he awaits a third trial.

Anthony DiPippo was released from a Carmel, New York, jail on Wednesday — the first time he's been free since his 1996 arrest in the slaying of Josette Wright.

The girl vanished in October 1994. Her remains were found in a wooded area in Patterson more than a year later.

DiPippo was found guilty of murdering and raping the girl in two separate trials. Both of those convictions were overturned.

DiPippo maintains his innocence.

Another man charged in the case was convicted in 1997 and is serving 25 years to life behind bars.
