A judge has set an Oct. 5 trial date for two former sheriff's deputies and a nurse charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of a 21-year-old man inside a county jail.

Mathew Ajibade (ah-jih-BAH-dee) died at the Chatham County jail in Savannah after fighting with deputies Jan. 1.

Prosecutors say Cpl. Jason Kenny shocked Ajibade with a stun gun while he was strapped into a restraining chair. An indictment says Cpl. Maxine Evans and jail nurse Gregory Brown failed to check on the detainee's condition as required — but falsified paperwork to make it appear that they did.

Prosecutors said in court Thursday that they plan to add perjury charges against the two deputies. Evans' attorney, Bobby Phillips, called charges against his client "bogus." He has demanded a speedy trial.
