Four Philadelphia police officers were injured in a traffic incident Tuesday afternoon by a motorist they were trying to help, who then tried to run them down before being shot by police, MyFoxPhilly reported.

The incident began when officers approached a sedan that had crashed into a wall in the vicinity of a subway hub in North Philadelphia.

The motorist, who police said was acting incoherently, struggled with the officers who attempted to remove him from the vehicle, then got back behind the wheel and hit the officers with his car.

The suspect then drove off and collided with several cars, including two police vehicles, and struck an officer on foot.

He finally came to a stop about two miles away, where police fired at his vehicle.

The suspect was shot in the chest and hospitalized in critical condition, according to MyFoxPhilly.

Three of the officers he hit were hospitalized with what reportedly were non life-threatening injuries. There was no word on whether the fourth required medical attention.

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter said he had spoken with the injured officers and told a press conference,“They are all pretty banged up, but in good spirits.”
