A former police officer is scheduled to make his first appearance in court on a murder charge in the 2013 shooting death of an unarmed man in Virginia.

Adam Torres is scheduled for an arraignment and bond hearing Wednesday on charges that he wrongfully shot and killed 46-year-old John Geer of Springfield in a standoff triggered by a call about a domestic dispute.

Torres was indicted Monday, two years after the shooting. Geer's family criticized the county and said officials stonewalled the investigation. The delay prompted congressional scrutiny of the Fairfax County Police Department's actions.

The county paid $3 million earlier this year to settle a civil lawsuit filed by Geer's family.

Police say both Torres and Geer are white. Race has not been raised as a factor in the shooting.
