CHARLESTON, S.C. – An elevator that was a priority of the late pastor and state Sen. Clementa Pinckney is now operating at Emanuel AME church in Charleston where Pinckney and eight others were killed a year ago.
The Post and Courier of Charleston (http://bit.ly/1trviTR ) reports that the elevator was dedicated in a ceremony Sunday.
Pinckney and former Charleston Mayor Joe Riley launched a fundraising campaign two years ago to raise about $280,000 of the $330,000 cost for the elevator which makes the church accessible for disabled people.
The Rev. Betty Deas Clark asked those at the ceremony to remember Pinckney and the eight others killed June 17 during a Bible study.
She said as members of the congregations ride the elevator the victims are riding in their hearts.
