A drag racer has been convicted of crashing into a family on a Philadelphia boulevard, killing a mother and three of her young sons.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports (http://bit.ly/1UVoNl7 ) 24-year-old Lancaster resident Khusen Akhmedov was found guilty Monday in a nonjury trial of four counts of third-degree murder.

Akhmedov's lawyer, Michael Diamondstein, acknowledged that Samara Banks and three of her four sons died because of his client's speeding and reckless driving. But he argued that the evidence didn't show the malice necessary to support a third-degree murder conviction.

Prosecutors say Akhmedov and Ahmen Holloman were racing as Banks and her children were crossing a north Philadelphia boulevard in July 2013, and Akhmedov's car hit them.

Holloman has been sentenced to five to 10 years in the case.
