Investigators in New York say they're searching for an SUV driver who abandoned a dog and sped away before the animal was hit by another car on the road last week.

The dog survived the Jan. 18 incident in Moriches on Long Island, according to the Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

A witness said the dog jumped out of the green Jeep Grand Cherokee's passenger side door, but when it ran to the other side of the SUV, the driver pushed it away, Newsday reports.

"He pushes the dog away -- and the dog is running after the car. The dog then gets hit... How do you do this to an animal?” SPCA Chief Roy Gross asked.

"He’s going to jail. This is not acceptable, what happened here.”

The dog, apparently a whippet mix, suffered some bruising but was expected to recover. The SPCA offered a $2,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction, according to Newsday.
