District of Columbia police say an officer shot and killed a man who confronted the officer with a large knife and another sharp object.

Police released few details about the shooting, which occurred shortly before 2 p.m. Thursday in a residential section of northeast Washington, about a block away from a high school.

Police spokeswoman Aquita Brown says the officer was called to investigate a report of a man armed with a knife. Police said in a statement that the man was carrying "a large, hunting-style knife along with a second edged weapon" and that the man confronted the officer. Police say the officer fired once in self-defense. The man was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Police have not identified the man. The shooting is under investigation.
