NEW YORK – A Cuban zoologist and the U.S. secretary of education are being recognized with honorary Ph.D.s from New York City's American Museum of Natural History.
Gilberto Silva Taboada (tuh-BOH-uh-duh) and Secretary of Education John King Jr. will be honored on Monday during a commencement ceremony at the museum's Richard Gilder Graduate School.
In 2009, the AMNH became the first museum in the nation to grant Ph.D.s.
The 88-year-old Taboada is a world-renown expert on bats who has long collaborated with the museum's scientists. He was part of its 2015 scientific expedition that investigated Humboldt National Park, one of the most remote and biologically important areas in Cuba.
King served as education commissioner of New York state before being tapped by President Barack Obama to lead the U.S. Department of Education.
