WASHINGTON – Court documents indicate that a woman who was shot by a District of Columbia police officer had been using drugs and said she was "ready to die" before she was shot.
Twenty-two-year-old Renita Nettles has been charged with two counts of assault. She also faces an arson charge over accusations that she set fire to the public housing unit where she lived with her mother.
Police say an officer shot her in the shoulder Saturday after she refused to drop a knife and advanced toward him. Court documents say she also was carrying seven other knives and a hammer.
According to the documents, Nettles' mother told police her daughter is bipolar and had been using PCP and synthetic marijuana.
Nettles is black. The race of the officer who shot her is unknown.
