When Francis Conway proposed to Marcella McAllister, he popped the question in a letter sent from Japan while he was serving with the Army after World War II ended.

She said yes, and 70 years later they're still together.

The Daily News of Batavia reports the couple got married Jan. 5, 1946, after Francis came home. Now, 94, he and his 93-year-old wife live down the hall from each other at the State Veterans Home in Batavia.

The couple raised nine children in Buffalo, where Francis worked for an aerospace company and Marcella served as the secretary for a city councilman. They later moved outside Batavia.

Their family threw an anniversary party Saturday in Batavia, where many of their 20 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren gathered to celebrate.
