An hourslong standoff between a person barricaded inside a building and Connecticut police ended Tuesday after the suspect was found dead, authorities said.

The Branford Police Department said it received a report of shots fired around 12:05 p.m. in the area of Main Street and Cherry Hill Road. When officers arrived, they encountered "heavy gunfire" coming from the upper floors of a business or apartment building.

Some officers were pinned down until armored BearCat vehicles arrived, police said. A gunshot victim was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The police department said there were several crime scenes.

Nearby homes were evacuated and authorities said no further threat remained Tuesday evening. Authorities have not provided details on the deceased suspect or what led to the standoff.

In videos posted online, officers can be heard over a loudspeaker and police vehicles are seen responding to the scene. In one clip, officers are seen taking cover near a vehicle and several gunshots are heard.

At one point, the police asked the suspected gunman to answer the phone or yell out a window. "We just want to talk to you," authorities said, a WTNH-TV reporter tweeted.

Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., said he was following the events closely.
