CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Two people are under arrest in North Carolina following protests that were sparked after a mistrial was declared in the case of a white police officer accused of fatally shooting an unarmed black man.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said the arrests were for assault on a police officer. The officers were not seriously hurt. The statement didn't say how many officers were involved.
Officials said while protests were peaceful immediately after the mistrial was announced in the case of Officer Randall Kerrick, more aggressive demonstrators appeared during the evening. Some gathered at the city's minor-league baseball stadium, shouting taunts and slogans at officers.
Police Chief Kerr Putney was scheduled to hold a news conference Saturday.
