The Buffalo Bills agreed Wednesday to pay $3 million to settle a class action lawsuit alleging that the NFL team violated federal law by sending fans excess text messages.
The Buffalo News reported that Jerry Wojcik, a Bills fan, claimed the team violated the federal Telephone Consumer Protection Act when he received three messages more in a two-week span than the 10 messages the team promised.
Wojcik sought $500 for each message and $1,500 for each willful violation. He will pull in $5,000 cash after the ruling and his lawyers will pull in $562,500, the report said.
The team will pay out about $2.5 million to fans in the form of debit cards that can be used at team stores. About 39,750 phone numbers were registered in the now-defunct service, the report said.
