BOSTON – A man authorities suspect provided the gun used by the Boston Marathon bombing suspects to kill an MIT police officer is due in federal court Wednesday for a court update.
Stephen Silva, of Cambridge, Massachusetts, is charged with heroin trafficking and possession of a handgun with an obliterated serial number.
Silva's indictment doesn't mention the slaying of MIT officer Sean Collier or bombing suspects Dzhokhar (joh-HAHR') and Tamerlan Tsarnaev (TAM'-ehr-luhn tsahr-NEYE'-ehv). It says Silva received a Ruger pistol in February 2013.
Two people with knowledge of the investigation who requested anonymity because they weren't authorized to discuss the investigation told The Associated Press the gun was used to kill Collier during a manhunt for the Tsarnaevs. Police recovered the Ruger after a shootout in which Tamerlan Tsarnaev was killed.
Silva was a friend of Dzhokhar's.
