CHARLESTON, S.C. – A bond hearing is set for a white former police officer charged in the death of a black South Carolina motorist in a shooting captured on cellphone video.
An Aug. 27 hearing has been scheduled for Michael Slager, a former North Charleston officer.
Attorneys for Slager said in court filings that their client poses little danger to the community and little risk of fleeing.
Slager faces a murder charge in the April 4 shooting death of 50-year-old Walter Scott. A bystander's cellphone video showed Slager firing eight times as Scott tried to run from a traffic stop.
The local prosecutor did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment.
