Birthday party gunfire leaves woman dead, officer wounded

Authorities are investigating a shooting at a children's birthday party in Alabama that left a woman dead and a police officer wounded when he was struck by gunfire while responding to the slaying.

Talladega County Sheriff Jimmy Kilgore tells WBRC-TV ( ) that the woman's ex-boyfriend fatally shot her in front of her child and several other children at a birthday party in Childersburg Wednesday.

The sheriff said the Childersburg officer was struck by gunfire when the suspect fired shots at arriving officers. Kilgore said the suspect ran from the house and then waged a gun battle with the officers.

Kilgore said the suspect, who wasn't immediately identified, was shot and taken to Coosa Valley Medical Center.

WBRC reports that the officer who was shot has been released from a hospital.
