Authorities investigate deputy's shooting of suspect

Authorities in South Carolina are investigating a Pickens County sheriff's deputy's shooting of a break-in suspect.

Chief Deputy Creed Hashe said in a news release that a woman called 911 shortly before 3:30 p.m. Sunday and reported someone had forced entry into her home in Easley.

Hashe said a deputy arrived, entered the home and confronted 18-year-old Franklin Reed Styles. Hashe said the deputy fired several times and at least one of the shots hit Styles. He was taken to a hospital for treatment of his injuries. Styles faces burglary charges.

Hashe did not provide other details on the shooting. Neither the deputy nor the homeowner was hurt.

The deputy's name was not released. He's on leave while the State Law Enforcement Division investigates. SLED says the deputy and the suspect are white.
