NEW YORK – Prosecutors say five of six Honduran National Police officers charged with conspiring to export drugs to the United States are in custody in New York.
U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara (buh-RAH'-ruh) said Tuesday the officers surrendered to face charges in an international conspiracy to import cocaine. One officer remains a fugitive.
Prosecutors announced the charges against the men two weeks ago, saying they engaged in a massive drug conspiracy from 2004 until 2014.
A federal grand jury in New York had indicted the officers last month on charges they conspired with the son of a former Honduran president to smuggle drugs into the U.S.
Former President Porfirio Lobo's son Fabio Porfirio Lobo was arrested in Haiti last year and pleaded guilty in the case in May.
