Chicago police flooded the streets with thousands of officers over the July 4 weekend. Fewer people were shot to death, but more suffered gunshot wounds than over the same holiday weekend last year.

There had been widespread fear in some of Chicago's most dangerous neighborhoods that the weekend could be particularly bloody following a June in which about 15 people were shot a day.

The Chicago Police Department said Tuesday three people were fatally shot and 47 others were injured in 42 shooting incidents. One other person was stabbed to death. During last year's July 4 weekend there were 34 shooting incidents that left seven people dead and another 48 injured.

The totals don't represent a dramatic spike in violence, but they also don't suggest the violence is easing.
