NEW YORK – Three men have been sentenced to over three years in prison for their roles in a cyber scam that infected more than 4 million computers in over 100 countries.
The sentences were announced Thursday by Judge Lewis Kaplan in Manhattan federal court. Kaplan said general deterrence was an important reason for tough sentences during a summer when it's impossible to pick up a newspaper without reading about another scam.
He imposed sentences of 3 1/3 years 3 2/3 years and four years in prison to three men who also must finish serving sentences for similar crimes in Estonia. The judge said he considered the fact that some time the men served in Estonia prisons before extraditions to the United States was in terrible conditions.
