Dundee, Scotland – Dundee United added more misery on top of 1 victory over the Glasgow side at Tannadice Park on Saturday.
United entered the contest having won its last three games and took the lead near the end of the first half through Keith Watson before Jon Daly added a second goal in the opening minutes of the second half.
Rangers, which has lost three of its last four games, was only able to pull one goal back through Sone Aluko on the hour mark.
Watson's goal came in the 37th minute when Lee McCulloch attempted to clear a throw in with his head. But the clearing attempt only made it as far as Watson, who lashed a shot past goalkeeper Allan McGregor.
Gary Mackay-Steven set up the second tally by getting down the left wing and crossing into the area for Daly to finish with a first-time redirection.
Aluko scored from a tight angle when his shot deflected off of United's John Rankin and beat goalkeeper Dusan Pernis to cut the deficit in half.
But Pernis was not under threat from Rangers over the final 30 minutes and United held out for the win.
Motherwell 1, Aberdeen 0
Motherwell, Scotland - Motherwell joined Rangers in second place on 54 points after securing a 1-0 win over Aberdeen at Fir Park Stadium on Saturday.
The lone goal arrived for the Steelmen in the 22nd minute courtesy of a brilliant left-footed strike from Steven Hammell.
Aberdeen's nine-match unbeaten streak comes to an end and the Dons sit six points adrift of a place in the top half of the SPL.
Motherwell has won four of its last five games.
St Johnstone 3, St Mirren 0
Paisley, Scotland - St Johnstone solidified its place in the top half of the league on Saturday by earning a 3-0 win at St Mirren.
The home side had drawn its last five games and had scored only once in its last six matches entering the contest, and the struggles continued for Danny Lennon's side.
Lee Croft's goal inside of two minutes had St Johnstone off to a great start, while goals from David McCracken and Francisco Sandaza in the final 15 minutes killed off the contest.
St Johnstone remains level with Dundee United in fourth place having earned seven points from its last three matches.
