Fabian Truss rushed for a career-high 219 yards and two touchdowns as Samford took an early lead and held on to beat Elon 26-15 Saturday.

The Bulldogs (7-3, 5-3 Southern Conference) had a 20-0 cushion with 4:25 left in the third quarter after Truss rushed 75 yards for a touchdown, the longest Samford run of the season by 32 yards.

The Bulldogs outrushed the Phoenix 280 to 28.

Elon (3-7, 1-6) finally got on the scoreboard when Thomas Wilson threw a 4-yard TD pass to Aaron Mellette early in the fourth quarter.

Andy Summerlin's 4-yard pass to Kelsey Pope capped an 82-yard drive and extended the Bulldogs' lead with 4:08 remaining, but the point-after kick failed.

Mellette then caught his second TD pass, an 18-yarder from Mike Quinn, with 2:20 to go for the final margin.

Wilson was 23 of 42 for 227 yards with one interception for the Phoenix.
