Portland, OR – The Portland Timbers signed defender Ryan Kawulok on Thursday.
Portland selected the 22-year-old Kawulok in the first round of 2012 Major League Soccer Supplemental Draft out of the University of Portland. He was a member of the club's development team for two seasons, and becomes the fourth Timbers Under-23 player to sign with the first team.
"This is a great opportunity for Ryan, and we are pleased to have him on this team," said Timbers coach John Spencer. "He is a talented player that has proved himself at every level coming up, and we're very familiar with what he has to offer after his successes at the University of Portland and with the Timbers U-23s."
Kawulok was named the West Coast Conference's defender of the year as a senior in 2011 for Portland. Midfielder Freddie Braun, goalkeeper Jake Gleeson and forward Brent Richards are other members of the U-23 team to sign with the first team.
Per league and club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Portland hosts the Philadelphia Union on March 12 to open the 2012 season.
